PINNALLA'17

Pinnalla´17 (”afloat/on the surface”) is a project organized by architecture students to honour the 100 years old Finland. The project was finished by the mural that was painted in the eastern facade of the building in Satakunnankatu 10. The painting was chosen by a student competition held in spring of 2017. Winner of the competition was Atso Airola with hes work “Pinnan alla” (“Under the surface”). Atso’s work was made to mural in summer 2017.

Project started in the end of year 2016 and soon after the start TOAS, Tampere student apartment association, became the main partner in the project. And soon Pinja/Olympiatalo in Satakunnankatu became the target for the project. Painted facade is part of the eastern part of the building, that is visible to several hundred meters.

In March and April 2017 there was an open competition for students to do their proposals for the mural. The competition was made together with Technical University of Tampere and the architecture history teaching. A course was held for students to be able to do the competition proposal and to get also credits. A seminar was held for the beginning of the course and after that there was three weeks to finish the competition work. The winner was chosen from 28 proposals. Atso’s work was favourite of the judges and the audience in guilds websites.

Atso tells about his work: In the main idea I wanted to use the shape of the wall surface and also give something more for the viewer who comes to look the work from a distance to closer. From a distance the light forms of animals seem to be reflections and melting ice in the water. But when you come close enough, you can see how the shape of oars brakes and so does the surface of the “water”. Shapes of the animals become clearer and the viewer is diving into the underwater world along with fishes and other water animals.

To integrate my work into the surroundings I’ve taken affects for the idiom from the surrounded environment. The facade decorations of Tuomiokirkko and Olympiakortteli have been influents to colours and the oarsman tells about Tampere city location between two lakes.

”Pinnan alla” is a work about nature and humans affect to it. Symbolism comes from Scandinavian mythology and current state of the world. Mural is tribute and reminding for 100 years old Finland. The work brings nature into urban cityscape and reminds us to protect all the valuable riches that “the land of thousand lakes” has under its surface.

Atso get to paint the mural in summer 2017 together with Tiina Kaisa Leppänen, artist from Tampere. They spent completely two weeks to paint the mural and now it’s a long-time part of facades in Tampere! It’s recommended to go and check the work on the site in Satakunnankatu, right next to Tuomiokirkko.
