TUTLAB
TUTlab gives many tools to make architecture students life easier. Especially helpful supplies for model making are laser cutter, 3D printer and CNC machine. Here is listed the most important links and advices to make it easier to start.
1. You can book the devices from TUTKA under the tab ”premises”: https://www.tut.fi/tutka-english/premises/index.htm
a. Instructions for booking the machines you can find here: https://portal.tut.fi/documents/335734/824115/Instructions+for+booking+the+machines+-+POP.pdf/5c3e86b2-bd92-42d4-b999-84b7674bb89f
b.To use the system, you have to be signed up to POP
2. TUTlabs own instructions cad be find in POP under the tab ”buildings and facilities”: https://portal.tut.fi/group/pop/study-info/buildings-and-facilities/tutlab
3. Materials you can buy from TUTlab in the purchase price. Price list is below the list but notice, that all the prices are about-prices and can be changed.
4. Using the machines for school and hobby purposes is free.
5. Staff is helping on the place but it is assumed that working happens by everyone themselves. So if you haven´t use the machine before, rather take some more experienced buddy with you to TUTlab.
6. Smaller laser cutter (300x610mm) cuts more accurate and cleaner. Bigger laser cutter (700x1000mm) fits better to bigger scale cuts and when you need to cut through. Note that laser cutters are the most used devices in TUTlab so you need to book them early enough before the deadlines.
7. 3D-printing is not difficult but it needs enough skills. 3D-model which is made for visualisations and drawings is not quite ready to be used in 3D-printing. If needed, just ask bravely help from your student colleagues.
8. CNC machine is computer-aided carving machine which needs a special education to be used. TUTlab is having these educations annually.
9. 3D-printing takes time from one hour to even 10 hours depending on your work. Find out how long your work will take to book a right amount of time. In these cases you can book the time so, that you leave your work to be printed during the night and pick it up when TUTlab opens in the morning.
10. Architecture department is not at the moment giving monetary support for the 3D-printings. That´s why it´s important to think are you going to print from gypsum (printer gypsum 2) or plastic (3D printer plastic). Printed gypsum is a bit cleaner than plastic, but it costs multiple compared to plastic.
If you have any questions, please contact direct to TUTlab staff or our guilds smithy officials Eetu Lehmusvaara and Joel Stenroos.
